Home Experiment: Baking Soda Rocket

As summer is heating up, alongside summer vacations for our kids, we thought it would be great to publish some home experiments so you'll have fun & educational STEM activities for your kids. In today's experiment, we will create a Baking Soda Rocket!

Materials you'll need

  • Small 500ml empty bottle

  • cork which fits tightly inside the bottle head

  • Half a piece of kitchen roll

  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda

  • Vinegar

  • Tape

  • 3 wooden pencils or Straws

Instructions

  1. Use the tape to attach the straws to the side of the bottle so it stands up - upside down.

  2. Pour about 3 cm of vinegar into the bottle.

  3. Wrap the baking soda up in the kitchen roll to make a little parcel.

  4. Choose a launch site, preferably outside. It needs to be on a hard surface to get best results.

  5. When you're ready to launch, drop the baking soda parcel into the bottle and quickly add the cork. Put the rocket down and stand back!

Warning - make sure you have a clear empty space and keep observers well back from the launch site as the rocket shoots up very quickly.

Enjoy your Rocket! (How high did it fly?)
